Becoming an American Lawyer

There’s pride in being called a lawyer. Sure, there is that reputation that precedes them, but the perks of being a lawyer are many. Though there are no guarantees that one will get a job, the chances of gaining employment are many. The career is high-paying, especially if one builds a good. So how does one can become a lawyer in America? What qualifications does one have to meet? What steps do one need to take for getting a bachelor degree.
The first step of becoming an American lawyer is by getting an admission into college. Unlike other fields where an associate degree is regarded as sufficient, this is not the case with law. One needs a bachelor’s degree first. Your choice of major specialization is not very important, so long as one maintain a high GPA. It is recommended that you avoid the difficult courses/subjects. While they will look fantastic on your credentials, they have real potential to pull down your GPA, which is too large a risk since you want to ensure you get into law school. The bachelor’s degree takes four years. You will be required to sit for (and pass) the Law School Admission Test, also known as LSAT Law school.

Once you finish your undergraduate course and pass your LSAT, you will need to gain entry into law school. It is extremely competitive so ensure you forward at least three different applications to three different law schools. It is all about increasing the probability of your acceptance. Consider things such as the affordability of the school before applying, instead of focusing entirely on things such as the reputation that is associated with the school. Law school takes a total of three years. Unlike when you are studying for your undergraduate degree, law school is a little more difficult. The program is so involving that you will hardly find time to work or dedicate yourself to any other activities for that matter. Most people prefer committing to learning for the three years, instead of doing it part time and staying for longer. A survival plan is deemed necessary and comes highly encouraged. Try and get involved in the course as much as you can. Apply for internships at law firms while still a student of the law to get a feel of life that is waiting for you once you are done with the studying.

After Law School

After you are done with law school, you will need to sit for, and pass the bar exam. This is the deciding test and it will demand the very best from you. It is the test that precedes certification, so you have to take the bar in the state you are hoping to practice law in. There are many resources available that you can use to ensure you are ready for the bar. When you pass, you get certified and can start your journey towards a rewarding career in law. It is good if you found a specialty that you are proficient in and focused on that. Explore the opportunities that open up to you, and always remain a student of the law throughout your lawyer career.
